Comox Marine Centre and Meeting Place

Town of Comox

Sources of Funding
Town of Comox:$400,000
Western Economic Diversification:$560,135
Total Budget: $1,280,180

The Comox marina is a hub of activity for commercial fishing, the First Nations shellfish industry, recreational boaters, and other related services. In addition, it is a site for various festivals during the summer months. Despite this level of activity, the site was under-utilized, resulting in missed opportunities for economic activity, particularly in the shoulder and winter seasons.

The Comox Marina Centre Meeting Place project includes a uniquely designed “sail building” which will provide recreational space for boater rendezvous and gatherings, as well as meeting space for up to 70 people for training and other uses. The facilities will also support festivals and markets with “plug and play” capabilities as well as house temporary seasonal vendors. The project will also include improvements to the wharfinger and washroom facilities as well as a waterfront boardwalk extension.

Project construction is currently underway. At completion, the project will establish the site as the main meeting place and destination in Comox, generating new economic activity through increased visitor attraction and resident usage. The ongoing economic impacts for the site, resulting from projected increases in marine tourism, non-marine tourism and marine training, are estimated at 18 local jobs after 5 years of operation.
