In 2017, the Ahousaht First Nation completed a Land Use Vision dividing their territory into seven regions, with specific uses for each region such as conservation, eco-tourism, and low-impact industry. With a new foundation for long-term economic development, the community needed a new economic development strategy and reassessment of existing projects and businesses as well as those in various stages of development.

Following the guidelines set out in the Land Use Vision, the Maaqutusiis Hahoulthee Stewardship Society developed a new strategy to provide a clear and agreed upon blueprint for future development of the territory. The project involved community consultation and a review of existing planning documents to identify economic development priorities. Specific deliverables include a 5-year strategic plan and operating budget, project timelines, performance measures and a human resource model for implementation.

With creation of the strategic plan, the Ahousaht First Nation will have a comprehensive roadmap toward development of new opportunities while protecting their cultural heritage and traditional way of life. Anticipated outcomes include accelerated implementation of existing and future projects, indirect creation of sustainable employment, and realization of the cultural, environmental and economic values laid out in the Land Use Vision.
