The District of Ucluelet is among many small working harbour communities that have experienced a decline in the resource sector in recent years. In 2012, Ucluelet identified key priorities in an economic strategy including tourism, expanding marine-related services, and business retention and expansion as opportunities for economic diversification.

Launched in Fall 2017, the Ucluelet Business and Employment – Retention and Expansion program (UBERE) delivers new supports to the local business community. The year-long initiative involved a comprehensive consultation with over 140 businesses, youth and First Nations to identify challenges and opportunities for business development, create new supports, and deliver program components.

Specific deliverables include new educational supports for businesses and entrepreneurs, a youth work-experience program, a tourism asset retention program, and a business conference and trade show. The project is anticipated to encourage existing business growth, create new employment, and strengthen new business development.
