The Sunshine Coast Regional District, the Town of Gibsons, the District of Sechelt, and Shishalh Nation have joined forces to address economic change created by the resource sector downturns, work to diversify the regional economy and capitalize on opportunity. The first phase of this work, supported by ICET, resulted in the development of a regional economic development charter and the creation of a Memorandum of Understanding to fund regional economic development.

This project consisted of the development of a five-year Regional Economic Development Strategic Plan and Implementation Plan for the Sunshine Coast. The strategy was developed using workshops, community consultation sessions, expert advice, research of best practices, and processes for prioritization and implementation of actions moving forward.

Completed in December 2017, the economic development strategy will guide the new Regional Economic Development Board and establish strategic priorities and the strong foundation required to implement economic growth and diversification priorities.

Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2017 through the Investment Readiness program.
