Our Coastal Economies App enables you to explore and visualize economic data at both local and regional levels for Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, and the islands and inlet communities from the Salish Sea to Cape Caution.
Getting Started with the App
We have partnered with CityViz to design this interactive web app for residents, economic development professionals, educators, and governments. The app is a tool to visualize economic changes and industry transitions across multiple criteria.
Providing a regional economic perspective across nine regional districts and 24 local areas, the Coastal Economies App provides industry-specific data in a user-friendly visual platform. This makes it easy to understand both current economic conditions and emerging long-term trends.
To get started with this new web-based application and the economic data we’re making available, we invite you to look at the user guide. Through the guide, we explain each economic indicator that can be queried, we provide step-by-step instructions on how to use each module, and we also offer an overview of user interface. You’ll also find a glossary of important terms and economic jargon that is found within the app, given its basis on the BC Stats data set it is visualizing.

State of the Island Economic Dashboard
In addition to this new app, you can learn more about the region’s economy through the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance’s State of the Island Economic Dashboard. This complimentary online system provides detailed information on the Vancouver Island economy, specific to four broad categories:
- Macroeconomic Indicators
- Population and Labour Forces
- Industry Analysis (Tourism, Aquaculture, Agriculture, and Forestry)
- Cost of Living and Affordability
The State of the Island Economic Dashboard key economic data published annually in the Alliance’s State of the Island Report, offering year-over-year comparisons and insights into regional economic performance and trends in comparison to the overall provincial economy.

Explore Other Regions of B.C.
The Coastal Economies App has been developed by CityViz, an B.C.-based company that creates and supports economic development data platforms. CityViz partnered each of the regional economic trusts in B.C., including Island Coastal Economic Trust, to provide this interactive platform for each service region.
Both the Economic Trust of the Southern Interior and Northern Development Initiative Trust have launched their platforms.
We would like to acknowledge Economic Trust of the Southern Interior for leading the development with CityViz and for their open collaboration with our trust and Northern Development Initiative Trust to make this economic platform available for Vancouver Island and the surrounding coast.
Data Source and Licensing
The data within the Coastal Economies App is provided by BC Stats using census sub-division boundaries established by Statistics Canada. Through a licensing agreement, Island Coastal Economic Trust has permission to use the data for non-commercial purposes.
