Mount Cain is a popular ski hill and recreation site on northern Vancouver Island. This project helped the Mount Cain Alpine Park Society (MCAPS) purchase equipment and supplies necessary for Covid19 safety measures in shared spaces. With the day lodge’s indoor capacity reduced by half, MCAPS created an outdoor serving area and beer garden to build back capacity. Funds were used to purchase outdoor seating, heaters, and snow fencing, and two shipping containers for off-season storage.
In addition, barriers were built in staff accommodation to separate beds and cooking areas, as well as in public-facing areas in the day lodge, ski shop and ticket booth. Directional signage and sanitizer stations were installed throughout the buildings, and additional PPE supplies were made available for staff and ski patrol.
Despite running a deficit for the winter season, MCAPS was able to maintain operations with these enhanced health and safety protocols in place.
Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2020 through the Community Placemaking program.
