This multi-faceted community project was designed to expand and diversify year-round visitor reach and assist with pandemic recovery efforts, by adding thoughtful placemaking components to Cumberland Village’s core.
The project created a central gathering place featuring visual elements designed to celebrate the area’s unique stories and assets. Improvements included large murals showcasing the local natural beauty, coal cart benches with interpretive signage detailing a historically important industry, metal sculptures with interactive components including pedals and sounds, and decorative flags and lighting.
Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2021 through the Community Placemaking program.
