The Port Alberni area has historically been known for its resource-sector economy founded on industrial development. However, in recent years land for industrial development in Port Alberni has become increasingly scarce. While recent initiatives have attracted the attention of potential investors, the community required a strategy to ensure industrial lands would be readily available for development.
The Industrial Land Action Plan will compile a full inventory of industrial land in the Alberni Valley, with the identification of constraints to making it available for development. The project will include recommendations, such as the potential for industrial or light industrial rezoning, the potential for an industrial park, and action-based strategies to attract industrial development.
Upon completion, Port Alberni will have an enhanced capacity to respond and capture prospective investment, particularly in the emerging aerospace and value-added forestry sectors. The project is anticipated to increase industrial attraction and retention, and support decision-making related to long-term economic development and land use planning.
Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2018 through the Investment Readiness program.
