The Sunshine Coast Arts Council is a volunteer-based society founded in 1966 to raise the profile of local artists and artisans
This collaborative project between the Sunshine Coast Arts Council and the Sechelt Downtown Business Association will provide the opportunity to create a larger, more welcoming, and purpose-built gathering and play space, located only two blocks from the downtown core, and encourages social seating for residents and visitors.
An outdoor pergola in the Arts Centre Garden will be converted into a covered seating and gathering public space with seating that mimics the shape of barnacles made from plywood. From the pergola, wayfinding will help link the Arts Centre, Red Cedar Weaving Studio, the Public Library, and the Rockwood Lodge. The animation of site-specific playboxes, situated in the downtown core and hosted by a cultural organization or business that is in proximity, will each hold a different game or activity. By activating a pedestrian-scale walking zone that connects four local cultural spaces and the hub of business activity in Downtown Sechelt, this project is helping to create a safe, accessible, and people-friendly environment.
Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2023 through the Community Placemaking program.
