This project will create a new outdoor gathering space in West Park, on the popular western peninsula of Bamfield. West Bamfield is only accessible by boat, and once there, space and options along the northern end of the boardwalk have been limited. The new outdoor space will not only help alleviate congestion in this area, but will also offer more amenity options for both residents and visitors in safe and inviting ways.
The new space includes a weather-sheltered pavilion, carvings and signage showcasing the Huu-ay-aht people and their stories, as well as interactive forest walks for all ages. The new interpretive signage, featuring local information and history, will draw history from the boardwalk area to enjoy West Park’s spectacular ocean views of Barkley Sound. The all-weather shelter will provide a welcoming space for hosting an array of events, from artisan fairs and music events to yoga workshops and more.
By providing a new public space for people to gather in West Bamfield, there will be increased opportunities for expanding commercial activity and driving more vitality into the area.
Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2021 through the Community Placemaking program.
