Project Title:

Developing an Inclusive, Collaborative Vision for Clutesi Haven Marina Development

Project Organization:

City of Port Alberni

Project Investment:

  • Island Coastal Economic Trust: $30,000
  • Applicant Equity: $34,800
  • Total Budget: $64,800

The Clutesi Haven Marina is situated on a highly valued, visible, and desirable piece of property on the Somass River, in Port Alberni, that sees up to 1.6 million people drive by the site each year.

To help capitalize on the area’s potential, the Tseshaht First Nation, the Hupacasath First Nation, and the City of Port Alberni have embarked on a joint, long-term master plan to envision how this place can be best redeveloped to the benefit of all community members and visitors.

The first phase of this larger plan will imagine how the Clutesi Haven Marina Uplands Site can support cultural, environmental, and economic opportunities while building respectful and sustainable government-to-government partnerships. The plan’s design process will take the three partners’ working group through a series of project phases to arrive at a consensus vision and robust plan to be presented to their respective and collective communities. This plan will then be integrated into the City’s Official Community Plan, before proceeding to second phase of vision implementation.

Island Coastal Economic Trust approved funding for this project in 2023 through the Investment Readiness program.
